Crafty Gals Corner - Challenge #102 - Anything Goes

It's time for another challenge with us at the

This week we are letting our creative juices flow

PRIZE - 3 Digital Images

Today I have used the Aurora Waiting For You digital stamp from The East Wind, one of our generous sponsors this week.

Here is another view
... there is so much shimmer and shine on the snowflake frame that it is a challenge to get a good photo that shows the shine and true colour.  The blue markers I used match the shade of the Navy Color Shine perfectly.

This card included two "firsts" for me.
First time doing a print and cut using my Cameo.
First time using Heidi Swapp Color Shine.

I found this pretty Snowflake Flourish Frame cut file in the
Silhouette Design Store and thought that it would frame Aurora perfectly.

Given that this was my first print and cut, I thought that I would share the gory details.
I put the digital image and cut file on my Cameo cut mat and sized (& rotated) the frame to fit the image.  I grouped the "base" with the image, moved the snowflake frame aside, then I set up my page to be A4 with registration marks, ensuring that the snowflake frame was completely off the cutting mat.  THEN the "fun" began!

I sent the sheet across to my laser printer and, yay, it printed up beautifully on the A4 X-Press It Blending card.

Excitedly I placed the sheet on my cutting mat and loaded it into my Cameo.
Next came cutting time but alas, after trying and trying, the machine would not recognise the registration marks.  OK, let's print it again.  No, that still didn't work.  Maybe it wasn't light enough ... no, using the torch did not help.

How did I solve the problem?
I sneakily printed the sheet again on copy paper in the ink jet printer and yes, the Cameo recognised it ... it cut dreadfully but at least it worked.  Now to my solution.  I cut the corners with the printed registration marks from the copy paper sheet and attached them to the "real" sheet with Washi Tape.  After I loaded the mat and set the Cameo to start I held my breath for a moment, the machine jerked around for a bit at the top left hand corner then SUCCESS, it moved down to the bottom LHS then zapped up across to the top RHS and started cutting.
Is that the end of the story?
No, I'm afraid not.
When I peeled the sheet off the cutting mat, the panel had not cut through.
I'm so used to cutting textured cardstock that I didn't even think of blade settings.  A quick check of the Blending Card pack reveals that it is 250gsm, head over to the computer, to find out what it is in pounds, changed the Cameo blade settings to coverstock and crossed my fingers.  One double-cut later and my panel was cut out perfectly, ready to colour.

To make my panel in to a top folding card, I cut two more solid panels and the snowflake frame in white textured cardstock.  I decided to mat the inside panel too, so made an internal offset layer too, ooh, another first for me.

I sprayed the snowflake frame and one of the larger white panels with Navy Color Shine.

After I coloured the image panel, I adhered it (using Helmar 450 Quick Dry liquid adhesive) to a solid white panel (because it was quite warped from going through the printer) then adhered the shimmering snowflake frame (using Tombow Mono Multi Liquid Adhesive).  I adhered the smaller white mat to the larged shimmering panel to make the back of the card (using Helmar 450 Quick Dry liquid adhesive).  I took this panel and lined the "bottom" against the left side edge of my Martha Stewart scoreboard and scored the top fold.  I adhered the front & back panels using my strong book binding glue (Helmar Acid Free Professional liquid glue) and at last I had a finished card.

PS - I have to confess that heat setting my printed images has not become a habit yet.  Luckily I remembered soon after I started to colour her face (before any toner bleed) so I quickly whipped out my heat gun and gave it a good zap.
